Grime 2 Is Out Now: 2026’s Darkest Metroidvania

Table of Contents

Grime 2 launched on March 31, 2026. It continues the strange metroidvania known for its faceless hero with a black hole instead of a head. The Grime 2 sequel keeps that visual identity intact. It pushes it further, both in gameplay and atmosphere.

An Even More Hostile World

In Grime 2, you play as a Formless. That’s an art mimic capable of absorbing the forms of nearby creatures. This absorption mechanic remains the backbone of the game’s identity. It also justifies the deepest combat changes this time around.

The original Grime already earned a place among the most original metroidvanias of recent years. That’s thanks to its enemy-ability-absorption mechanic. Grime 2 doesn’t abandon that foundation. Instead, it expands it with new ways to transfer powers and more vertical exploration.

How the Combat Evolved

The original Grime built its identity around a simple loop. You parry an enemy, absorb its ability, then use that ability against the next threat. Grime 2 keeps that core intact. However, it widens the toolkit considerably, adding tendril-based attacks and expanded traversal options.

As a result, backtracking through the map feels less like a chore. It feels more like an extension of combat itself. That’s a meaningful shift for a genre where movement and combat are supposed to feel like the same system. Developer Clover Bite leaned into that idea across the game’s marketing.

How Critics Received Grime 2

According to data from VGTimes, Grime 2 arrived with a Metacritic score of 82/100. Player ratings landed at 7.8/10. Those are solid numbers for an indie title. They place Grime 2 comfortably among the best-received releases of the first half of 2026.

A Crowded Year for Metroidvanias

Grime 2 arrives in a year where the metroidvania genre is unusually competitive. Hollow Knight: Silksong still dominates conversation. Meanwhile, several smaller titles fight for attention on Steam. Even so, an 82/100 Metacritic score and a loyal 7.8/10 player rating prove that Grime 2 found its own identity.

Is Grime 2 Worth Playing?

If you enjoyed the original Grime, this sequel deepens everything that worked. Physical combat, ability absorption, and a distinctive art direction all return, sharper than before. For newcomers, Grime 2 still works as an entry point, though the previous story helps explain Formless’s role.

With releases like this, 2026 confirms that indie games keep setting the creative pace of the industry. You can watch the official Grime 2 launch trailer to see the combat in action.
